Finding Peace in College Planning
Before I started college, classes had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know how to plan for classes, nor what a credit hour was. Now that I’m planning for graduation, I can confidently say it doesn’t get easier. In each stage of your life, you are faced with new challenges and responsibilities. This is exciting and frightening all at the same time. Though there are many steps you can’t take to make your college season a swifter transition.
Firstly, prayer…
Above all things, seek the Lord. Read His word and spend time in prayer, asking the Lord to speak to you. However, when you do… pause. Listen. When you are praying, take time to be still in silence to open the door for the Lord’s voice. How can you ask God to speak to you, but not give him the space to do so?
Trust in the Lord. When faced with a decision, pray. Then, go. Keep in line with God’s word, but if you are faced with roads and you still aren’t sure which path the Lord wills for you to take… make a choice, and always leave the door open for Him to redirect you if it be in His will. God does not make all of your decisions. He allows us the freedom to choose, so long as it does not contradict His word.
Next…
This could be my over-organization side speaking, but make a checklist. Go to your major required course list, and if your college doesn’t provide a checklist, make your own.
Map out the next four years, and how many which classes you are going to take each semester. This will be abundantly helpful for your future self. Color code and organize by category. Read course reviews and space out classes that you believe will be more challenging.
Lastly…
Get a planner. My 7th-grade social studies teacher required a planner for her class. She spent time teaching us how to use it, and practicing the routine of using it daily— looking back now… I am so thankful. You can use your laptop, phone, or iPad— I prefer a physical planner. This will be forever helpful throughout not only college, but also your life.
