Papaw’s Homemade Pancakes from My Home to Yours

This recipe is in good ole grandpa fashion— a little this, a little that. My grandpa, a gardener, beekeeper, & exceptional woodworker, knows how to make extremely delicious pancakes. This recipe makes as little or as much as you need for your home. Add a little more or a little less of what you need to make this batter best for you and yours.

Ingredients:

  • 5 heaping tbsp self-rising flour

  • 1 farm-fresh egg

  • buttermilk

  • homemade vanilla bean extract

  • pinch of organic butter

  • optional toppings: maple syrup, fresh berries, sliced bananas, or whipped cream

Instructions:

  1. Combine all of your ingredients in your favorite large bowl.

  2. Whisk ingredients until you reach your desired consistency (see notes below).

  3. Turn your stove top on low heat.

  4. Use a pinch of butter to melt in your best stainless steel pan. (1-2 minutes)

  5. Once your butter has melted, gently pour the batter into your heated pan. At this point, you can add any topping you prefer.

  6. Soon your batter will bubble up, allow the bubbles to POP before flipping the pancake to ensure that it is cooked all the way through. This should take about 4-7 minutes per pancake, depending on the consistency of your batter.

  7. Once all of your homemade pancakes are finished cooking, stack them high! Drizzle them in your favorite maple syrup and gather everyone around to enjoy!

These pancakes are not only easy to make but also a wonderful way to start your day. Share them with family or friends, or enjoy them just for you. Either way, every bite is a warm hug from home!

Notes:

If you like your pancakes a little thinner, pour in a touch more buttermilk. If you’re after something thick and hearty, ease up just a bit. Working with what you’ve got? Water will do just fine — simple & steady. And when it comes to vanilla, feel free to stir in a spoonful of homemade vanilla bean extract, or pick up a jar from your local market. However you make them, may your kitchen smell like comfort — and your table feel like home.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
